Believe it or not, different methods can be used when working on Smileys in Photoshop. This is not only true when editing an image, but when working with the entire photo series. You must know how to change colors, and adjust the levels of contrast for each frame. These factors will play a large role in how your smiley face looks.

The first thing you must master when learning how to make someone smile in Photoshop is the background eraser tool. The background eraser tool allows you to create a thin line that appears out of the original image. To do this, just click on the eraser button on your mouse and place the cursor anywhere within the image. Then, use the left and right arrows to draw the line inside the image. It will appear as if the border of the original image has been erased.

After using the background eraser tool, it's time to select the high contrast layer. Using the toolbar at the top of the screen, select the eraser tool again. This time, the area you want to erase is the high contrast layer that surrounds the area of the smiley face. Once you have finished selecting the high contrast layer, go to the bottom right corner of the layer palette. Select the drop-down menu for selecting a new color.

Once you have finished your selection, hit enter. Now that you have a new background layer, select the color you want to use for your smiley face. When working with multiple colors, it is best to use the radial gradient tools or a combination of radial gradient tools for the finer details.

After selecting a new color, it's time to create the outline of the smiley face. Using the eraser tool, create a thin outline. After that, erase the entire border from the original image and start creating a new one. You can also use the gradient tools for precise gradation. To erase a section of the original image, select the small circle in the lower right corner of your image canvas.

After creating a new border, remember that you need to remove the dark color from your original image. Select the background tool, and then choose the high contrast filter. While you are editing the image, make sure that you remove the high contrast layer. The next step is to remove the hair from the face and replace it with a blank white mask.
