You should be seeing a selection area around the image where you clicked, and it looks like a square. The same thing happens when you select the Move and hover over the square. You will see that a rectangular selection area is created around the selected area. Double-click in the selection area to deselect the background. Now you can select the background to remove it or just highlight it and press the TAB key on your keyboard to remove it.

The next step is to use the adjustment tool to adjust the opacity and the blend mode for the selected background. If there are gradients and other areas of irregularity in your image, you should use the adjustment tool to adjust the strength and the opacity and blend mode to remove them.
